How to Read This Chart
The basic hiragana chart is organized in a 5-column vowel grid (a, i, u, e, o). Each row adds a consonant — the ka-row produces ka, ki, ku, ke, ko, and so on. Empty cells indicate sounds that do not exist in modern Japanese.
Dakuten marks (゛) voice a consonant: k → g, s → z, t → d, h → b. Handakuten (゜) changes h-row sounds to p-sounds. Combination characters pair a consonant kana with a small ya, yu, or yo to create blended syllables.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hiragana characters are there?
There are 46 basic hiragana characters, 25 dakuten and handakuten variations, and 33 combination characters (yoon), for a total of 104 hiragana characters.
What is the best way to learn hiragana?
Start with the five vowels (a, i, u, e, o), then learn one consonant row at a time. Use a combination of chart study,
writing practice, and
quizzes to reinforce your memory. Most learners can master all basic hiragana in 1 to 2 weeks with daily practice.
What are dakuten and handakuten?
Dakuten (゛) are two small marks added to certain consonants to voice them — for example, ka (か) becomes ga (が). Handakuten (゜) is a small circle added to the h-row to create p-sounds — for example, ha (は) becomes pa (ぱ).
What are combination characters (yoon)?
Yoon are combinations of a consonant kana with a small ya (ゃ), yu (ゅ), or yo (ょ) to form blended sounds like kya, shu, or cho. They are written as two characters but pronounced as a single syllable.
